According to the latest rumours, Avatar Kinect will launch on 27th May, so with mere weeks before release Microsoft has revealed more of the development process behind the new Kinect-controlled chatroom.

Whereas Video Kinect and the upcoming Skype use video and voice for communication, Avatar Kinect uses your movements and facial expressions to control your on-screen Avatar: you frown, they frown. You smile, they smile.

Eric Lang, a general manager at Microsoft Startup Business Group, explained a bit more about how the software was created:

The work that we did was taking something that was essentially a demo and turning it into a product. It’s a huge amount of work.
